Valproate (valproic acid, VPA, sodium valproate, and valproate semisodium forms) are medications primarily used to treat epilepsy due to their prevention of seizures. They are also prescribed for bipolar disorder and are sometimes used to prevent migraines.
It first came into medical use in 1962 and has since been widely used, with 2022 seeing 2 million prescriptions in the United States alone.
